Mary's Many Roles

At Mass this morning, the sermon was on the many roles Mary played and the role model she was for those of us who are challenged in modern life.

Mary was
- a widow
-the mother of a prisoner
-an unwed mother
-a mother who had to watch her condemned son face a horrible execution

Mary also was a disciple of Jesus, a follower of His word.

Faith in adversity, what a wonderful example as I struggle with faith myself. As the priest suggested, "The feast of the Assumption of Mary deals with her death, but it is by studying her life that we can learn so much!"

The Many Roles of Mary

As we celebrate the Assumption of Mary into heaven, at mass this morning the priest spoke of the life Mary had led. She was a widow. She was an unwed mother. She was the mother of a criminal. She had to watch her son be persecuted, condemned and executed in a most horrible fashion.

Mary was also a foremost disciple of Jesus, His follower as well as His mother.

As the priest said, we need to ask ourselves not just how did Mary die, but how did she live? His answer was that she lived a life of dignity and of faith in the Lord. She offered a role model for us all, no matter what indignity we might have to bear.
