Of Compunction

Athanasius of holy memory besought the abbot Pambo to come down from the desert to Alexandria; and when he had come down, he saw there a woman that was an actress, and he wept. And when those who stood by asked him wherefore he had wept he spoke. "Two things," said he, "moved me. One, her perdition; the other, that I have not so much concern to please God as she hath to please vile men."

I must say that this seems to be a great evil to me, that is our actions are so focused on pleasing everyone but God. Even in worship in the midst of the Church I find myself more concerned about the perceptions people might have of me, than I am concerned about pleasing the very heart of God.

American Unemployment?

Why is it that Democrats constantly rant about the dreadful unemployment crisis in this country, when all of the folks I know that really want to work are indeed working. I know a fair number of people that are unemployed, indeed I live in a county where the average annual income is $16,000 and probably 35% of the working population of this county is unemployed, but I can't get anyone I know to go to work for me? Huh?

I have guys all around me that complain about the lack of a job, but when one is offered to them, it just never quite meets their requirements. I am always amazed at the people that want wages that are typical of individuals that have bachelor degrees, yet they haven't finished high school. Am I wrong to think there is something really twisted with that idea?

I find opportunity is there for those who are willing to get up and go after it. I found that there was an absence of high dollar jobs in my little piece of rural America, and the jobs that I did see, did not appeal to me, so I travel from West Virginia to Alaska every year to provide for my household, and I can only see this as being available to most everyone in this country.

How often I think of protestors, and wonder how much mommy and daddy pays for their tuition, and how many times they have got a blister on their own hands?
