As the season approached we only had three hunts this fall on the books and because of limited guide availability and the approach of our baby girl we had to cancel a late season grizz hunt and this left us with two combo hunts totaling right at 30 days straight of combination hunting!
I will save most of the details for an upcoming article but our first hunter was pursuing brown bear and caribou and took the caribou on day one of what had to be one of the worst stretches of miserable rain and socked in weather I can remember and eventually after a miss on one bear we lost a the first big game animal ever in my career, a really nice 8' plus brownie that took several rounds, left bone and blood trail behind as he plunged 500 - 700' down and alder choked slope, finally losing us with a diminishing blood trail as darkness fell on us in the middle of the tangled jungle. The bear had began moving sideways on the slope as the blood trail diminished and it was obvious the hits were not what we wanted.
The following hunt was a two one one hunt with me supervising and helping out as Mark McGuiness guided my two British clients (Ian Harford and Steve Wild) and their cameraman in pursuit of 8 big game animals on a 15 day hunt! Virtually no one would have thought it realistic to think that we could actually harvest 2 moose, 2 black bear, 2 brown bear and 2 caribou and most everyone realized getting 3-5 of those animals would be a major accomplishment in that time frame but ultimately we took everything but the 2nd moose which ultimately was a judgement call to not pursue it because of the additional work involved, and yes we were all beat after taking care of the first bull along with all the weather we had to deal with as well. The grand moment of this hunt came though on the 12th and last day of our actual hunting with a dilemma making the decision to pursue a double on two caribou bulls, or a brown bear on the opposite side of the creek. Ultimately the guys decided to try to take both bulls, but as soon as they started making their move the brown bear started down the slope and they had to change their minds and go after the bear at the last minute. The bear ended up less than 200 yards out when they took it and within 30 minutes they went on to take both bull caribou at 400 yards! 3 big game animals within 30 minutes is simply something that I'm not sure I will ever see again, but it was a phenomenal end to a fantastic hunt!
